Freshman Jacqueline Chao prepares to serve in her doubles match with freshman Allison Zhang on March 1.

Under the guidance of new coach Jamie Nelson, the tennis team played its first match against Forest Lake High School on March 1.

Senior Johann Dias (6-0, 6-1) and sophomore Lily Brown (6-4, 6-3) were the only winners.

“I played pretty well,” Brown said. “The opponent I played was the same girl I played last year. She beat me last year, but now I beat her, so it shows that I’m getting better.”

Freshman Chardonnay Needler, who is new to tennis, and sophomore Zihao Sui went 0-6, 1-6 in girls’ doubles against the Falcons.

“I was really nervous because it was a lot more serious than it was during practice,” Needler said. “I wasn’t really ready for the sun because when we practiced in the morning, the sun wasn’t fully up yet.”

Freshmen Jacqueline Chao and Allison Zhang also lost in girls’ doubles, 5-7, 1-6.

Senior Colby Connor and junior Christian Van Vleck were defeated in boys’ doubles, 2-6, 3-6.

Senior Nathan Chan could not attend. And due to an odd number of Forest Lake players for mixed doubles and junior Elizabeth Brownridge’s absence, sophomore Nico Burns did not play.

The Cavs hope to bring home the win at their next match at Highlands High School, Friday, March 4.
