Country Day’s tennis team wins first home game, adds to undefeated record

Country Day’s tennis team defeated Creative Connections Art Academy 7-2 at Rio Del Oro Sports Club on March 15.

Sophomores Delsyn Beaton and Liam Kaschner both won in boys singles, 6-1, 6-3 and 6-1, 6-0 respectively.

Coach Jamie Nelson commended the team, who has been undefeated in the first 6 games of the season.

Senior co-captain Vanessa Escobar, who played No. 2 girls singles, has been undefeated in the season, winning all of her matches so far.

Escobar won 6-0, 6-1, along with senior Tina Huang, who went 6-2, 6-3 in the girls singles sweep.

“I think going to practice and having past experience helped me play the way I did,” Escobar said.

Escobar hopes to increase the power of her serve in the next  games.

In addition to Escobar’s win, freshmen Ashley Lattyak and Harper Abeyta won their match in No. 1 girls doubles, 10-1.

“We were consistent and had good teamwork,” Lattyak said.

Nelson said that although the team had a strong performance, there are still things to be improved on.

“We’re struggling with boys doubles to get a combination that works well. It’s difficult.” Nelson said.

In the game, both boys doubles teams lost, with seniors Dylan Margolis and Arjin Claire going 10-5 and sophomore Ishaan Sekhon going 10-2 with senior Nihal Gulati.

Escobar was happy with the skill of players on the team, which includes competitive players to beginners.

“With the support of everyone, we have a good, functional team,” Escobar said.

The tennis team will play its next game against Encina at Rio Del Oro Sports Club on March 29, at 2:30 p.m.
