Country Day boys’ varsity soccer sweeps game against John Adams Academy

On Wednesday, Oct. 11, Country Day boys’ soccer team defeated John Adams Academy 6-1, scoring  three goals in the first quarter of the game.

Freshman Ryan Scripps and junior Andrew Burr each scored two goals, with freshman Sunny Sui and senior Ishaan Sekhon each scoring one more. Freshman Nolan Montoya saved one goal and freshman Blaine Vargo additionally saved five.

Head Coach Matt Vargo was pleased that the team was focused and secured the game early, allowing the players to have more fun and play in spots they usually don’t play in.

He also acknowledged the players’ good work and skill.

“It was our seniors’ day. I thought Luke Scripps had a really good game. Ishaan Sekhon had a good game. And for non-seniors, I think Andrew Burr played really well. Derek Taylor got to play in the field the whole game, so that was nice for him. He’s usually in goal and he does enjoy coming out on the field, so I thought he played really well too,” Coach Vargo said.

During this game, the team worked on reducing the amount of long balls and therefore increasing the chances of maintaining possession after passes.

“I thought we played too many [long balls] in the first half, but in the second half, we tried to slow it down and then play a short passing game,” Coach Vargo said.

After the game, the team held their annual ceremony to celebrate the graduating seniors: Aiden Cooley, Ishaan Sekhon, Delsyn Beaton, Orlando Ponce-Blas, Ike George, Luke Scripps, and Derek Taylor.

The players each received a crown, a soccer ball signed by everyone on the team, and a poster with their number and last name while the coaches reflected on their accomplishments on the team.

Coach Vargo said, “I always love it because you get to honor the guys that have been here doing it for years and you get to just see the growth, not only as a soccer player but as a person and the maturation that happens over a four year period in high school is pretty significant. We’d like to highlight that.”

The Cavs have their homecoming game on Friday, Oct. 13 at 4 pm against Buckingham Charter.
