Volleyball homecoming games canceled due to mask mandate dispute; senior night to happen instead

The Cavaliers’ girls volleyball homecoming games set for Sept. 30 were canceled after the opponent forfeited the game rather than comply with Country Day’s COVID-19 masking policy that requires players wear masks for indoor sports.

Sophomore right-side hitter Annalucia King was initially saddened by the news.

“I was really excited for our team’s debut this Friday,” she said. “It was expected to be a really fun game, so obviously, the team’s a bit down.”

Patricia Jacobsen, math teacher and team parent, shared her frustration.

“After last year’s cancellation, I know the girls were really excited to get back out there,” she said. “I know there are pros and cons to everything, but the news definitely came as a disappointment for us all.”

In the meantime, Jacobsen intends to focus on the upside.

“Hopefully this will create more turnout for the soccer game this Friday,” she said, in reference to the soccer team’s game against Sacramento Waldorf at 4 p.m. “It might be a small victory, but it’s something.”

Similarly, junior outside hitter Haylee Holman was excited at the thought of a possible change in rankings.

“A cancellation is never fun, but another win puts us in a better position for playoffs,” she said. “It’s not a pretty win, but it is one nonetheless.”

Despite the news, coach Jason Kreps remains confident in his team.

“The team has been playing very well, and I’ve seen a lot of growth from all the players. Just as they’ve adapted to these new guidelines, I am sure they will adapt to this.”

In lieu of the cancellation, Athletic Director Matt Vargo planned a senior night for both the volleyball and soccer teams for Oct. 5 against Buckingham Charter at Country Day. Soccer competes at 4 p.m. and volleyball at 6 p.m.

“Senior night is typically the last game of the season,” he said. “Everyone says a few words, and we take some time to appreciate the seniors for their participation. We have a bit of history with Buckingham, so I’m excited to see how these games play out. Although it’s not a homecoming game, it should be an exciting night for everyone.”
