Though the track and field team had one of their largest turn-outs, 4 people, at the League Championship Finals, sophomore Heidi Johnson was the only athlete who placed first in any category.
On May 11, the team attended the CVCL/NPAC/SMAL League Championship Finals, competing in seven categories.
Johnson placed first of two athletes in the varsity women’s 300-meter hurdles race, finishing at 56.03 seconds.
Johnson also participated in the women’s varsity high jump and long jump. She placed first of seven in the long jump, finishing at 16 feet 11 inches, and second of two athletes in the high jump, finishing at four feet six inches.
Lastly, Johnson competed in the varsity triple jump, in which she placed first of three athletes, finishing at 33 feet six inches.
“I was trying to not overexert myself and win my events to go to Sectional (Championship),” Johnson said.
Though Johnson injured her ankle during the triple jump, she expects the injury to heal by Sectionals.
During sectionals, Johnson hopes to improve her marks so she can move on to Section Masters.
“I didn’t make much improvement this season in terms of my marks, but I tried to work on my technique more, and I think that will help next year,” Johnson said.
Sophomore Kyra LaFitte ran the women’s 100-meter varsity race. LaFitte finished at 16.22 seconds, placing 21st of 24 athletes.
LaFitte also participated in the women’s 200-meter varsity race. She placed 20th of 24 athletes, finishing at 36.70 seconds.
