The JV volleyball team faced another tough opponent on Sept. 16, when they played Valley Christian at home during the Sports Boosters’ Chilli Cookoff. They lost, 0-2.

The girls dropped the first set, 5-25.

“Our communication was really bad,” sophomore co-captain Chloe Collinwood said.

“We just were missing a lot of balls because we weren’t talking.”

Going into the second set, the team set a goal of doubling the number of points they scored in the first game, freshman co-captain Alyssa Valverde said.

With 12 points in the second set, the team exceeded their immediate goal. But they still lost the set, 12-25.

“The second game we came out more focused and got into the swing of things,” Collinwood said.

In between sets coach Kristi Mathisen emphasized not missing balls and completing more three-touch plays.

Because the majority of the team is new to organized volleyball, a major goal is to get more experience under their belts.

“Each game is really important to us,” Valverde said.

“The more we play, the more we can work on things like communicating and getting the ball on hard serves.”
