Strong man-to-man defense gives boys’ basketball another win against Cristo Rey

The boys’ basketball team went into the recent Cristo Rey game confident of victory after previously beating the Saints, 74-48, on Jan. 6.

And their confidence proved justified as they once again walloped Cristo Rey, 70-42, on Jan. 31.

Junior Cole Johnson led the team with 23 points. Junior Harkirat Lally followed with 16, and junior Reggie Fan had 10.

In fact, Lally had his highest scoring game of the season.

Fan attributed the win to playing good man-to-man defense and making their layups.

Junior Jake Longoria agreed.

“They could only go right, and once we shut that down, they couldn’t get shots to fall,” Longoria said.

Although the Cavs are tied for second in league with Valley Christian, the boys think they have a good chance of making it into the playoffs, according to Longoria.

Meanwhile, they’re working on defensive rebounding.

However, Longoria said that the Cavs need to work more on offense than defense.

“We need to improve our time with the ball,” Longoria said. “We can’t just turn the ball over carelessly.”

The Cavs are now 13-4, 6-2 in league.

The boys’ next game is on Tuesday, Feb. 7, away against Faith Christian at 7:30 p.m. The Cavs previously defeated the Lions on Jan. 13, 50-45.
