The varsity girls’ volleyball team won, 3-0, against the Buckingham Charter Knights, Sept. 20.
Among the many sets and spikes that got them to their 25-18, 25-15 and 25-23 wins, junior Katia Dahmani’s serves proved lethal.
At the end of the second set, Dahmani set a six-point service run that kept the Knights at bay and accomplished one of the team’s goals: to prevent the Knights from scoring more than 15 points in a set, according to captain Alexa Mathisen.
Mathisen claimed that this was the perfect game to mix things up, as it was much easier than previous ones had been.
However, she said, it was also harder to focus.
Junior Yasmin Gupta added that coaches Jason Kreps and Sarah Song played more different people.
“We had different rotations tonight,” Gupta said.
Because of this, some players, like junior Lea Gorny, had more playing time than usual.
Gupta praised Gorny for “coming off the bench and doing a great job having several kills, passes and serves.”
Despite such success, there were still some challenges, as exemplified in the close third set.
“Sometimes we just hit hard instead of hitting to the hole in their defense,” sophomore Heidi Johnson said.
Sophomore Tori Van Vleck agreed, adding that in that set they almost played down to their opponent’s level.
“We did slack off a couple times when we thought we had the game,” she said.
But for Mathisen, the hardest thing (both literally and figuratively) was the Buckingham gym floor.
“The most challenging thing was (that) the floor was slippery,” Mathisen said.
