Varsity volleyball team victorious after 20-point lead in final set

With two nearly flawless sets, the girls’ varsity volleyball team won their fourth game of the season against El Dorado Adventist on Sept. 13.

Starting strong, the Cavs won 12 points – including four aces from senior Tori Van Vleck – before the El Dorado Eagles could score their first.

“That’s OK,” senior Brandy Riziki shouted as the Eagles scored their first point. “Keep it up!”

The Cavs kept pushing forward, allowing the Eagles to score only a few points before bringing the game to set point, 24-6.

And even after a serving error, the Cavs took the first set with a 25-7 finish.

But even with such a strong win, coach Jason Kreps thought the team could improve.

“During the first game, the team made four service errors and one hitting error,” Kreps said. “That’s five of seven points that (the Eagles) didn’t have to earn.”

But the second set wasn’t as easy for the Cavs.

They went back and forth with the Eagles for the first 18 points until the Cavs were able to again take the lead.

The girls continued to further their lead with an ace from senior Heidi Johnson, bringing the score to 19-10.

And though the Eagles kept fighting, a hit from senior Bella Mathisen through their defense won the second set for the Cavs, 25-17.

According to Kreps, the team won with a smaller lead in the second game due to coaching decisions.

“In the second game, I made some adjustments to positions and put some people in new spots,” Kreps said.

“We started to win when we started making our serves and (when) I put some people back into their regular positions.”

The third set had the Cavs back in their usual form, with two aces and 13 points to the Eagles’ two.

“In between each set we were talking to each other and telling each other what we had to do,” junior Alyssa Valverde said. “We hyped eachother up, and it really helped us win the last set.”

And the girls finished in style, with an ace from Van Vleck to clinch the game, 3-0.

The Cavs’ next game is against Faith Christian on Sept. 18 at 6:00 p.m. at home.
