The tennis team was riddled with injuries this week in its first league match of the season against Forest Lake Christian, Feb. 27.
Down many players, with junior Michaela Chen out with the flu and senior Zihao Sui traveling back from China after mid-winter break, the Cavs won one of their three matches, two boys’ singles and one girls’ double.
For the boys’ singles, last year’s returning champion senior Nico Burns lost his match, 3-6, 3-6, and junior Leo Eisner de Eisenhof won his match, 6-1, 6-2.
Eisner was a “pleasant surprise” in his match, according to Nelson.
Eisner, who enrolled in October, said he had not played tennis in eight months and was rusty since the team had had only one practice.
Junior Chardonnay Needler and senior Lily Brown lost in girls’ doubles, 3-10.
Nevertheless, Nelson said they communicated well.
“They didn’t win today, but they will do better in the future,” said Nelson.
Brown said she did OK, considering she hasn’t played tennis for two years.
“My doubles match with Chardonnay was super fun,” Brown said.
“It wasn’t overly competitive, and we were just there to have a good time.”
Eisner said that he had fun, too, and called the Forest Lake team “extremely friendly.”
Their next match is Tuesday, March 6, at Highlands High School at 3 p.m.
