In their first game of the season Nov. 27, the girls’ basketball team found themselves in a back-and-forth battle against the Vacaville Christian Falcons.

The Falcons came out strong, taking an early lead ending the first half.

“They were really fast and aggressive at the start,” senior Annya Dahmani said.

According to senior Yasmin Gupta, containing her was a priority for the Falcons from the start.

“They were pressing us and triple-teaming me for the first half,” Gupta said. “We did a good job of breaking it, and we moved the ball very well.”

But the Falcons slowed down in the second half, and Gupta was able to capitalize.

“In the second half, you could see they were tired, and they ended up playing zone,” Gupta said. “This helped because there was less pressure on me.”

Gupta finished with a team high of 25 points.

Senior Katia Dahmani (13) keeps the ball away from the Falcons while junior Bella Mathisen (42) stands ready to defend.

Going into the fourth quarter, the girls found themselves trailing 31-37 with only four minutes left.

But the Cavs kept the game close. Gupta then scored the next seven points, giving the Cavs the lead, 38-37, with a minute and a half left.

The Falcons called a timeout, but it didn’t help them. The Cavs got another stop, and Gupta hit fellow senior Esme Bruce-Romo for a layup with less than 10 seconds left to seal the victory for the Cavs, 40-37.

Gupta was glad to win but said the team still has to work most on simply learning their plays.

The next game is against the Bear River Bruins on Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. at Live Oak High School in the Live Oak Tournament.
