Only sophomore track star qualifies for Sacramento Meet of Champions

Only sophomore Heidi Johnson qualified to compete in the Sacramento Meet of Champions, held on April 29 at American River College.

Johnson competed in the varsity triple jump. She finished at 35 feet and placed fourth of 26 athletes.

Johnson said her greatest challenge was trying to apply various jumping techniques during the meet.

“This year I’ve been trying to learn better form for my jumps,” Johnson said. “But I haven’t improved my form when I’m actually (competing).”

Regarding her score, Johnson said she was happy with reaching 35 feet but would like to go farther.

“I was surprised to place only fourth at the finals,” Johnson said. “It seemed like many people weren’t jumping their best at the meet.”

Attempts to contact coach Nick Domich for a comment were unsuccessful.

The team did not attend the Sactown races on April 28 as planned.

Their next meet will be the CVCL/NPAC/SMAL League Championship Finals, held on Thursday, May 11, at Forest Hill High School at 3:30 p.m.. This will be an all-team meet.
