Girls’ varsity basketball had only six players on Homecoming night on Jan. 13, but they still played a strong game, ending in an easy 47-14 win against Faith Christian High School.
Coach Latonia Pitts was proud of the girls’ hard work, which paid off in season highs of 10 steals for junior Annya Dahmani, 11 points for senior Alexa Mathisen and seven rebounds for junior Katia Dahmani.
However, the game was significant in another way for junior Yasmin Gupta.
Gupta, the leading scorer with 28 points, was tripped by the other team multiple times and hit the ground hard.
She sustained a severe concussion that will keep her out of school for at least a week, but she said she will return to playing afterward.
With so few players, the game was tiring, and rebounds were few and far between because of the Cavs’ big lead.
However, the game was overall unchallenging, especially since the other team was shorter and looked younger, according to sophomore Heidi Johnson.
“We had quick hands and were able to get several steals, which really helped, and then we finished our fast-break layups from those steals,” Gupta said.
“They were an aggressive team, but we were overall better,” Annya said.
Pitts said that juniors Esme Bruce-Romo and Riya Rampalli really shone on defense.
“We still have things to continue to work on throughout the rest of the season, (but) I’m glad we had a victory on Homecoming,” she said.
The next game is Friday, Jan. 20, against Buckingham Charter Magnet High School at Vaca Pena Middle School at 6 p.m.
