Country Day girls basketball team scores first win against Cristo Rey

The Country Day girls basketball team was victorious in their home game on Jan. 25, winning 24-21 against the Cristo Rey Saints.

Senior shooting guard Zola Grey led the Cavs, scoring 11 points. Junior strong forward Brynne Barnard-Bahn scored 4 points, sophomore point guard Annalucia King scored 2 points, senior small forward Tina Huang scored 2 points, freshman small forward Ashleigh LaPlaca scored 3 points and sophomore center Rachel Pirie scored 2 points.

Coach Latonia Pitts was proud of the team’s victory. She said the team had improved from their previous games, especially regarding their defensive work.

“We did a lot well,” she said. “We moved the ball really well, we moved off the ball really well and our defense won the game.”

She highlighted Grey’s performance.

“Zola played really well, she played hard. Unfortunately, she fouled out, but she played really strong.”

Grey was also happy with the team’s victory.

“Our ball-handling was way better; our rebounding was way better,” she said.

She noted the number of people who were able to attempt and make shots.

“It’s been a goal that we’ve been having for other people to shoot the ball more,” she said. “It’s just building up that confidence for other people.”

Pitts said she was happy with all of the players’ performances.

“I can go on and on about each player,” she said. “Collectively, they all played phenomenally.”

The Cavs’ next game is at home on Jan. 29, at 9:00 a.m. against Valley Christian.
