Freshman scores all of girls basketball team’s points in loss

The girls basketball team lost 70-10 to the visiting Valley Christian Lions on Jan. 17, with freshman Jada Grey scoring all 10 points for the Cavs (2-9 overall, 1-4 Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League).

“The team needs to work on shooting and boxing out,” coach Latonia Pitts said. “We’re a small team, and we need to work on ways to beat the big (teams).”

Sophomore Daisy Zhou agreed.

“We need to work on boxing out since it is an effective way to get rebounds,” Zhou said.

Zhou and junior Joanne Tsai saw positives in the loss to Valley Christian.

“This time, ‘star,’ which we use for zone offense, worked much better,” Zhou said. “It helped keep more of us open to shoot.”

Tsai added that the team never lacked effort.

“Even though they were ahead of us, we didn’t give up. We tried our best up until the end,” Tsai said.

The Cavs’ next game is Friday, Jan. 24, at 6 p.m. at Western Sierra in Rocklin.
