Junior finishes seventh, ninth in state swimming championships

Junior Rebecca Waterson and senior Joe Zales were Country Day’s only swimmers in the 2019 California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Swimming and Diving Championships on May 10-11 at Clovis West High School.

Waterson finished seventh in the 100-yard butterfly in 54.47 seconds and ninth in the 100 backstroke in 55.83 seconds.

“My favorite part of the day was getting to cheer on people that I know,” Waterson said. “But getting to walk out a championship finalist was also pretty great!”

Zales did not qualify for the finals in either of his events, the 200 and 500 freestyle.

To make in the finals, swimmers had to place in the top 16 in the preliminaries.

Waterson finished sixth in the butterfly prelims with a time of 54.64 seconds and ninth in the backstroke in 55.87 seconds.

Zales said he was suffering from a head cold and that his training for an upcoming meet in Vancouver, British Columbia, could have been a factor.
