Senior wins long jump, triple jump in wind

The track and field team competed in its second league meet of the season on April 9 at Encina.

Senior Heidi Johnson won the long jump at 16 feet, 4 inches and triple jump at 34-0.

Johnson said the wind made jumping more challenging.

“I need to work on attacking the board even if there’s a head or crosswind,” she said.

Junior Charles Thomas placed second in the 400 meters (57.51 seconds) and third in the 800 (2 minutes, 27 seconds).

Thomas said windy conditions affected his performance in the 800.

“I was fighting the wind, and I lost focus, which proved detrimental to my time,” Thomas said.

“I need to improve my start in the 400-meter and speed up my pace in the first three-quarters of the race.”

Junior Chris Wilson finished fifth in the 800 (2:32) and 13th in the 1,600 (5:49).

Junior Maddie Woo ran the 100 in 15.99 and had a shot put of 16-5. Her placements were unavailable.

Woo said she threw her best shot put of the season.

“Now that I’m more used to the weight and size of the shot, I am able to focus more on my technique,” Woo said.

However, she said her 100 was slower than usual.

“It might’ve just been one of those off days for me,” she said.

Junior Emma Boersma was the lone pole vaulter at the meet and also ran the 100. Her results were not available.

Sophomore Kenyatta Dumisani competed in the 100, finishing fourth in 12.11 seconds.

Freshman Craig Bolman placed 14th in the 100 (12.63) and 200 (26.72).

The team’s next meet is Tuesday, April 16, at Encina.
