Tennis team forfeits five matches, falls to Highlands

Team result: Country Day lost 7-1 at Highlands on April 10, dropping the Cavs’ league record to 4-4.

Individual results: Senior Leonardo Eisner won 6-2, 6-3, and freshman Vanessa Escobar fell 7-6 (1), 6-4. In doubles, sophomores Stephanie Ye and Joanne Tsai lost 10-8, and senior Chardonnay Needler and freshman Sicily Schroeder were defeated 10-1.

Comment by coach Jamie Nelson: “We began the match with five forfeits.  In spite of the results, I want to recognize Vanessa, (who made an) incredible effort.”

Inside info per Eisner: “I was able to hit a lot of gentle shots, which sounds counterproductive. I actually learned that my opponent isn’t quite able to return a light shot that goes just over the net.

“The wind was the most challenging part of the match. It was hitting the court diagonally, which is really the worst of both worlds. I had to adapt each time we switched sides. Granted, both of us had to deal with the wind, so in theory, it really isn’t an issue.

“My next match will be against the only person who ever beat me in this league. I am hoping to settle it at 1-1 instead of 0-2 in terms of our records regarding each other. With him, I’m going to have to play safer with the ball and not go as hard.”

Inside info per Ye: “Joanne and I encourage each other. We never blame each other, even when we lose.

“The match was really long. We needed to pay attention all the time, (which) is tiring.”
Next match: Friday, April 12, at 4 p.m. against Forest Lake at Rio Del Oro.
