Date: Feb. 5
Opponent: Cristo Rey
Location: St. Francis Armory
Result: Country Day lost 44-36 to fall to 4-15 overall and 1-12 in league.
Country Day scoring: Junior Jackson Crawford 14, sophomore Avinash Krishna 6, junior Ted Zhou 6, junior Aaron Graves 4, sophomore Martin Cao 4, sophomore Max Wu 2.
Inside info from small forward Krishna: “Overall, we played really strong defense and — dare I say — the best of the season. Obviously, we lost, but we excelled on defense. However, we were lacking on offense. We made a decent amount of turnovers. But it was a pretty low-scoring game due to good defense from both teams.”
Inside info from shooting guard Wu: “Cristo Rey didn’t shoot much. They mostly scored because we turned the ball over to them many times, and they just ran really fast and got a lot of layups.
“We missed a few open layups, and some were blocked. Had we made those layups, we would have won by over 10 points. However, we made almost all of our free throws.”
Comment by coach David Ancrum: “The game was good. The guys played really well. The team could definitely improve on scoring from close (range). We missed close shots that could’ve made the game closer.
“However, the team did move the ball well, and our man-to-man defense was much better.
“Cristo Rey was really active, great offense, but our defense was good as well.”
Next game: Wednesday, Feb. 6, 8 p.m., at home against El Dorado Adventist.
