In Ski and Snowboard team’s first meet, senior captain finishes second

The ski and snowboard team headed to Boreal Ski Resort on Jan. 11 for the team’s first meet of the season.

Seniors Luca Procida (team captain) and Nate Jakobs and sophomore Colin Usrey placed second, 12th and 17th, respectively. Sophomore Bri Davies, freshman Hailey Fesai and senior Tori Van Vleck placed eighth, 10th and 25th, respectively. All competed in the giant slalom. The sole snowboarder on the team, sophomore Ming Zhu, placed 25th. Freshman Miles Morrow could not attend the race due to a prior commitment.

Even though Fesai and Van Vleck had never raced, the team “did great for the first race of the season,” according to coach Jason Kreps. He added that the “conditions were nearly perfect,” allowing the team to perform at its best.

Instead of the racers completing one course twice, as usual, they competed on two courses, according to Jakobs.

“Most of the team agreed that one of the courses was easier than the other due to a more consistent slope,” Jakobs said.

“Everyone did really well for the first race. Everyone pulled their weight and raced well.”

As this was the first race of the season, nerves were high, but “everyone really enjoyed themselves and had a great time,” Fesai said.

The team’s Jan. 21 race at Boreal was canceled due to too much snow, according to Fesai.

The Cavs’ next race is on Monday, Jan. 28, at Northstar Ski Resort.
