Boys basketball team ‘plays hard’ but loses by five to Faith Christian

Date: Jan. 12

Opponent: Faith Christian

Location: Faith Christian

Result: Country Day lost 39-34 to fall to 3-8 overall and 0-5 in league.

Country Day scoring: Junior Jackson Crawford 12, junior Chris Wilson 10, junior Ted Zhou 6, junior Aaron Graves 4, sophomore Martin Cao 2.

Inside info from sophomore shooting guard Max Wu: “We’ve played better teams before; however, two of (Faith Christian’s) shooters were sinking 3s from far away. And my position on defense is on top (of the key) to defend against those two. One of the big problems was letting them get their shot off. I was too slow to get over to them.

“We had a lot of turnovers in this game as well. Especially in the last two minutes of the second quarter, they pressured us. We just couldn’t handle the ball (well), so we ended up giving them a lot of free layups.

“The team can improve by handling the ball better and identifying the shooters and putting a stop to them. We also need to make our layups. When we miss a layup, the other team ends up getting the ball and scoring on us.”

Comment by coach David Ancrum: “The team played very well: aggressive and hard. (We made) most of our layups and (got) most the rebounds from guard positions.

“(However, Faith Christian) had tall and pretty good shooters. But our defense was pretty good.”

Next game: Tuesday, Jan. 15, 7:30 p.m., at home against El Dorado Adventist.
