With small roster, girls basketball team loses to Western Sierra

Date: Jan. 10

Opponent: Western Sierra

Location: Western Sierra

Result: Country Day lost 67-14 to fall to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in league.

Country Day scoring: Senior Heidi Johnson 6, sophomore Lindsay Burback 4, freshman Vivian Conner 2, sophomore Joanne Tsai 2.

Inside info from small forward Burback: “Our rebounding in this game was better than from any other game we had, which was good!

“But our main struggles on the court included passing and knowing what to do next when receiving the ball. I like to have a quick plan in my head and scan my surroundings.

“The team also was not taking as many shots as usual, and when we did, most of them did not go in the hoop. The other team was pressuring us back to our own side, which made it difficult to cross the court and earn more points.”

Inside info from senior shooting guard Brandy Riziki: “We were pretty tired, but we worked hard too. We need to work on handling the ball and holding it tightly when we catch it.

“We should also focus during the game because we let go of a few jump balls when we could’ve gotten our hands on (them).”

Inside info from point guard Johnson: “It was obviously a tough game. I’m not even sure what to say because we haven’t made much improvement from our previous games.

“We aren’t catching the ball, throwing hard passes or getting enough rebounds, which is frustrating on the court.

“With our size team (eight players), everyone is important, but mostly everyone on the team is new, so it is hard to play fast teams.

“I’m grateful to have a team that puts effort during the games, but we all have to spend a lot of time and dedication on this sport, which players are not giving.”

Inside info from freshman small forward Daisy Zhou: “Our score at the end was far from the winning team’s, but we really tried.

“The lack of players is a huge reason why we didn’t do well because the players get tired without many breaks.

“We need to work on catching the ball when someone passes it, being ready for the ball at all times, being more thoughtful before passing the ball and strengthening our defense. Most importantly, we need to believe in ourselves.”

Comment by coach Latonia Pitts: “Today was a low-scoring game on our end, and unfortunately, we couldn’t get our hands on the ball or our shots to fall. I am hoping that we can put this game in the past and do better on Saturday.”

Next game: Saturday, Jan. 12, 4:30 p.m., at Faith Christian.
