Coed soccer team wins sixth league game against Western Sierra

Date: Oct. 10

Opponent: Western Sierra Lions

Location: Western Sierra Collegiate Academy

Score: 3-1

Inside info per senior Nate Jakobs: “We came out a little slow, but we picked it up as the first half went on. About 15 minutes in, (senior Yelin Mao) played a perfect through-ball over the defense, and I put it in for our first goal. They scored about 20 minutes later after a few passes put together turned into a goal on a good shot.

“In the second half, we played a lot better and kept the ball on their half for most of it. On a free kick, (senior Abby LaComb) smartly hit the ball on the ground through their defense, and I had an easy tap for the goal. She put it right on the money.

“(Freshman Arjin Claire) scored our third goal with about 10 minutes left with a strong strike to the  upper part of the net, just under the crossbar. We played good defense and held them until the end.

“(Junior Maddie Wu, sophomore Lilianne Brush, senior Alan Gallardo and senior Jack Christian) played particularly well, too. (Wu) did a great job pressuring defenders and winning the ball back a few times, and Lili’s great positioning led to a good shot and some very good passes. Alan played really well on the left side, muscling through defenders and putting a few great crosses in, and Jack did a great job owning the middle of the field throughout.”

Inside info per Brush: “I think that we didn’t play as well as we could have. A lot of us were just kind of out of it in general. For example, I am sick.

We weren’t very focused in the first half, and I think that everyone was just kind of tired because our first touches on the ball weren’t as good as they usually are. In the second half, after coach talked to us at half time, we improved a little.”

Inside info per coach Matt Vargo: “We started a little slow – picked it up in the second half. Arjin stood out. (Freshman Ethan Monasa) also had a good game.”

Next game: Monday, Oct. 15, against Cristo Rey High School at 5:30 p.m. at Cristo Rey.
