Injured, sick players leave Cavs unable to triumph over Lions in second matchup

Senior Annya Dahmani goes in for a shot against a Lion at the girls’ first game against Valley Christian on Jan. 23. Unfortunately, Dahmani was absent from their Jan. 27 game because of an illness.

Opponent: Valley Christian Academy

Location: Valley Christian

Date: Jan. 27

Final score: 37-77, Cavs’ loss

Inside info per senior Yasmin Gupta: “We were missing (me and seniors Annya Dahmani and Pria Nijhar), so it was all on (junior) Heidi (Johnson), who was our only ball handler. And we did not box out.”

Fun fact: Gupta was out with a strained ligament in her leg, Nijhar with a torn ACL, and Dahmani with an illness.

Inside info per junior Heidi Johnson: “It was tough playing without (Gupta, Dahmani and Nijhar) because they not only help us with scoring, defense and ball handling, but also they just have experience. It’ll definitely be challenging heading into our last few games without (Gupta and Nijhar).”

Next game: Wednesday, Jan. 31, against the Cristo Rey Saints at 6 p.m. at St. Francis High School.
