Strong defense allows boys to continue winning streak

Jacqueline Chao
Seniors Bryce Longoria and Reggie Fan play defense on a Western Sierra player in their Dec. 6 game against the Wolves while senior Jake Longoria runs over to help.

Opponent: El Dorado Adventist School

Location: El Dorado Adventist

Date: Jan. 3

Final score: 74-55, Cavs’ win

High scorer: Senior Cole Johnson with 20 points.

Coach David Ancrum’s defensive star: “(The boys) had really good defense (in the fourth quarter), but especially Swaggy (sophomore Ted Zhou).”

Inside info from senior Bryce Longoria: “I think we let up a little in the second quarter and kept (El Dorado) in the game longer than we should have. Shots weren’t falling for us, so that forced us to focus more on stopping them from scoring.”

Inside info from senior Harkirat Lally: “We played all right. The help defense and ball movement in the second half were good.”

Team areas of improvement per Longoria: “We need to work on coming out with energy and extending the lead as early as we can. We also need to attack the basket more.”

Comment from Ancrum: “It was a good game even though we weren’t able to make a lot of our shots. It was just one of those days. We picked up the playing at the end, though.”

Next game: Friday, Jan. 5, against the Cristo Rey Saints at 7:30 p.m. at home for the boys’ second league game.
