Sophomore swimmer earns best time of all at CAL Championships

Sophomore Joe Zales earned his fastest time ever at the Capital Athletic League (CAL) Championships.

The championships were on April 28-29 at American River College.

Freshman Rebecca Waterson and Zales participated in the preliminaries on April 28. Because SCDS swims as an exhibition team, Waterson and Zales were unable to swim in the finals on April 29.

Waterson swam the 100-yard butterfly and backstroke races. She did not disclose her times but said she was pleased with them.

For the butterfly stroke, Waterson said she is working on her breathing pattern. She is also trying to improve her stroke rate in her backstroke swims.

In the 200-yard freestyle race, Zales swam his best time ever (1 minute, 46 seconds). He swam his fastest high-school time in the 500-yard freestyle race (4 minutes, 46 seconds).

Zales said coach Brian Nabeta was happy with his performance.

The Section Championships at Tokay High School in Lodi will be on Thursday, May 11, for the girls, Friday, May 12, for the boys and Saturday, May 13, for the finals.
