Senior Emil Erickson prepares for an incoming ball in his match against a Golden Sierra player.
Date: April 21
Opponent: Golden Sierra High School
Final scores: Sophomore Allison Zhang won (6-0, 6-0), senior Christian Van Vleck won (6-1, 6-0) and senior Emil Erickson won (3-6, 6-4, 7-5).
Inside info from Zhang: “A big part of why I won was (my opponent’s) weak serves.
“Also, I think some of my returns were good. I was able to aim the ball to a part of the court that she wasn’t covering.”
Inside info from Van Vleck: “I won because my opponent’s hits were much less consistent than mine, although I would have liked to have more consistency (in) my own.”
Inside info from Erickson: “During the second half of the match, I (got) into a groove. I was hitting my shots pretty well and (got) a decent amount of first serves in.
“I wish I had started the match off stronger and had been able to finish out the games when I was (ahead) by a lot.”
Important fact: Golden Sierra brought too few female players, causing sophomore Chardonnay Needler to sit out the match.
Next match: The league singles championships will be on Monday, April 24, at HIghlands High School.
