Girls’ varsity basketball players each get lots of court time in simple match against Cristo Rey

Date: Jan. 6

Opponent: Cristo Rey High School

Score: 65-23 (Cav victory)

Leading scorer: Junior Yasmin Gupta (34)

Coach’s quote: “This is the most fun the girls have had in a long time playing the game.”

Inside info from junior Annya Dahmani: “In the third and fourth quarter we started doing this thing where if someone turned the ball over or did a careless mistake, they would be subbed out right away.”

Because of this, the lineup changed constantly, and everyone got lots of court time – especially since Cristo Rey isn’t a difficult team to play.

Junior Riya Rampalli also made her first basket of the season.

“We all wanted her to score, so we passed to her and fed her the ball continuously,” Dahmani said.

Inside info from Gupta: “This game allowed us to try new plays.”

Unavailable players: Freshman Briana Davies is still out with an injury, but according to Dahmani, this was the first game where the whole team (except for Davies) was playing.

Next game: Tuesday, Jan. 10, against Lutheran High School at 6 p.m. at home.
