Golf team ties for first; Edwards, Felix, Petchauer qualify for sections

The golf team tied for first place at the SMAL league championship at Haggin Oaks on May 2.

Sophomore Miles Edwards and seniors Ben Felix and Brad Petchauer all qualified for sections with their scores.

With 498 strokes overall, the Cavs came in first alongside Sacramento Adventist Academy. Right on their heels was Buckingham Charter Magnet High School with 499 strokes. Valley Christian Academy followed with 558 strokes, and Freedom Christian School came in last with 583.

Edwards had the fewest strokes of all the Cavs with 86, followed by Felix with 87 and Petchauer with 103. Freshman Luca Procida was right behind with 104 strokes, and senior Jake Sands had 118.

“I was proud of the finish to the season,” coach Matt Vargo said. “We had to win outright to qualify for sections. It was a close match too.”

Edwards and Felix also both qualified for 1st team all league, Petchauer qualified for 2nd team all league, and Sands was an honorable mention.

“You have to earn it yourself,” Vargo said of the placements on the team. “There’s no commission to vote.”

“It felt great to get it!” Felix said. “It’s the second year in a row (for me). I had a bad start to the season, so I didn’t know how it was going to go.

“I feel really good with my swing now, so I’m confident going to sections.”

The next match is the section divisional on Monday, May 9, at Darkhorse Golf Club.
