Senior Serajh Esmail (third from right, in red jersey) competes in the 100-meter at the Cavs’ March 22 track and field meet. He finished 13th of 33.
Conflicting classes and sophomore projects resulted in a turnout of only three members for the track and field meet on March 22 at Rio Linda High School.
Sophomore Steven Wang placed second of 16 in the 400-meter with a time of 56.23 seconds.
“I feel surprised that I got second place,” Wang said. “We were all really close when we finished. I think I will do better next time.”
Wang also placed 11th of 30 in the 200-meter with a time of 25.57.
Senior Serajh Esmail placed 13th of 33 in the 100-meter with a time of 12.09.
“I ran with a lot of fast public-school kids in the first heat, which is the fastest heat,” he said. “The race was really close.
“I lost fifth place in the last five meters – it was that close between everyone.
“It was good fun!”
According to Esmail, he was planning to compete in both the 200-meter and the 100-meter, but left before running the 200-meter because he needed to return for AP European History.
Freshman George Nguyen also ran the 100-meter, placing 28th of 31 with a time of 13.92.
“The other teams were pretty fast,” he said.
In the 200-meter, Nguyen placed 27th of 30 with a time of 29.1.
The next meet is the Metro Invitational on Saturday, March 26, at Burbank High School.
