Varsity boys win on Valley Christian turf for first time ever

Date: Feb. 2

Opponent: Div. VI Valley Christian Academy Lions (7-11)

Score: 80-64

Quarter 1: 15-15

Quarter 2: 42-30

Quarter 3: 62-46

Leading Scorers: Sophomores B.J. Askew (23), Rick Barros III (20), Jayce McCain (20)

Fast facts: The Lions play with an unorthodox style of subbing five new players in at a time. They have 15 players on their roster (which is more than can fit on the stat sheet), whereas Country Day has nine.

This is the first time in history the Cavs have beaten the Lions while playing at Valley Christian.

Inside info from McCain: “We contested their threes. Drinking a lot of water was important down the stretch because we were getting tired from having to get back to contest their shots.”

Post-game interview with sophomore Cole Johnson: “This win means something, and we all know that. This is the first time this has ever been done.”

Post-game interview with McCain: “We’re building a legacy here, and that’s just incredible.”

Player of the game (per coach David Ancrum): Jesus (Chuy) Galindo-Sanchez for “rebounding and playing great defense.” “I’m happy he got to play a great game in front of his parents,” Ancrum said.

Next game: Feb. 3 at 7:30 p.m. against Cristo Rey at St. Francis High School
