Varsity Cavs fall to Orange Glen, 52-55, in last game of tournament

This is the fourth and final game of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic in Palm Desert (Dec. 26-30). The Cavs finished 16th of 16 teams in the tournament. SCDS was the smallest school to play in the tournament with their opponents’ student body sizes ranging from 1500-2500.

Date: Dec. 29

Opponent: Div. II Orange Glen High School (Escondido, Calif.) (4-5)

Number of students: SCDS: 150, Orange Glen: 2370

Score: 52-55

Leading Scorers: sophomores B.J. Askew (19), Rick Barros III (19) and Jayce McCain (12)

Inside info from sophomore Jake Longoria: “The score went back and forth most of the game and remained very close until the fourth quarter. They took a lead, and we started to come back with very little time left, but missed a game tying 3-pointer and ran out of time.”

Coach’s comment: “Although the team improved on their defense today, the defense and overall ball handling could be better. The other team definitely moved the ball better than us, making playing good defense more difficult,” coach David Ancrum said.

Players of the game per Ancrum: Askew and McCain because of their improved defense and strong offense

Unavailable player: junior Adam Dean (sprained ankle)

Next game: The Cavs play Sacramento Adventist in their first league game of the season on Tuesday, Jan. 5, at Sacramento Adventist at 7:30 p.m.
