Varsity boys advance to tourney’s second round, but poor rebounding results in 56-81 loss to Pinnacle

This is the second game of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic tournament (Dec. 26-30).

Date: Dec. 28

Score: 56-81

Opponent: Div. I Pinnacle High School (3-6)

Location: Cathedral City High School in Cathedral City, Calif. (near Palm Springs)

Leading Scorers: sophomores Jayce McCain (24) and Cole Johnson (11)

Coach’s comment: “(Pinnacle) played well. We just had problems rebounding” – David Ancrum

Inside info from McCain: “Our size puts us at a disadvantage because we can’t rebound. We don’t have big enough players to contend with these teams that have players that are six foot eight. Our tallest player is only six foot four.”

Inside info from sophomore player Bryce Longoria: “We just allowed the other team too many offensive rebounds. The starters got tired.”

Injuries: Johnson (bruised hip bone) and McCain (bruised ribs) played with injuries.

Player of the game (per Ancrum): “McCain for an all-around good floor game, and he let the game come to him.”

Unavailable players: Junior Adam Dean (sprained ankle)

Next game: Dec. 29 at 5 p.m. against El Camino High School or Bountiful High School at Rancho Mirage High School in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
