Of the six JV players, sophomores Jake and Bryce Longoria and Reggie Fan were the only contributors to the 38 points in the game against Napa High School on Dec. 15.
The Cavs were defeated, 38-65.
Jake led the team with 16 points, followed by Fan with 15 and Bryce with 7.
Other JV players are sophomores Harkirat Lally, Steven Wang and Howard Yuan.
The boys were dismissed at 3 p.m. and drove one-and-a-half hours to Napa.
The Cavs came into the game with an overall record of 1-1, previously losing to Vintage High School and defeating Woodland Christian.
The Napa Indians were 0-1.
At halftime, the score was 25-33, and at the end of the third quarter it was 34-48.
The Cavs sank only two baskets in the fourth quarter, both made by Jake Longoria.
“Stuff didn’t fall for us, and we started forcing passes,” he said. “We didn’t get calls (from the refs) that were pretty obvious. So we just got demoralized.”
Longoria attributed the loss to the defense.
“Our defense was really bad,” he said. “We’re limited in the plays we run because of the language barrier and the number of players (six).”
“It’s a struggle (having six players),” Longoria added.
Bryce Longoria agreed.
“We turned the ball over and allowed too many points off turnovers,” he added. “We got tired because of this, and only having six players made it rough.”
In addition, he was sick during the game, he said.
Fan said fatigue was a factor in the loss.
“We didn’t go for rebounds or get back on defense,” he said.
And offense wasn’t as strong as it could’ve been either, according to Jake Longoria.
“On offense we started to force too many drives,” he said.
For future games, Longoria said the boys need to stop turning the ball over and work more on defense.
“We need to improve our help on defense and cutting off the baseline,” Bryce said. “(However) we moved the ball well on offense.”
The boys’ next game will be on Tuesday, Dec. 22, away against Highlands High School at 3:30 p.m.
