The anticipation was high as everyone waited for the referee to blow the whistle. Sophomore Theo Kaufman, who had been fouled and given a free kick, stood waiting. As soon as the whistle blew, he kicked and scored for the Cavs.
SCDS tied with Encina High School, 4-4, in the boys’ second game of the season on Sept. 2.
The Cavs scored four times during the first half, while Encina had no goals.
Within the first six minutes, sophomore starter B.J. Askew scored.
Askew finished the half with two more goals, completing a hat trick.
During the second half, the tables turned and Encina scored four while the Cavs were scoreless.
Sophomore Jayce McCain said that Encina’s defense was good, but their offense was very good.
“It was hard for our defense to contain them,” he said.
Coach Matt Vargo said that the players who stood out were Askew, McCain and freshman Nate Jakobs.
“(McCain) did an exceptional job in the middle,” Vargo said. “(Jakobs) did a great job marking their number 10.”
Vargo said that the team needs to improve their fitness and communication skills.
Junior Christian Van Vleck agrees about the need to improve communication.
“We had a couple of communication errors,” he said. “I know I made quite a few.”
The boys’ next game will be Wednesday, Sept. 9, at home against Lutheran.
