Freshman Heidi Johnson runs solo in first cross-country meet

There was only one SCDS runner at the cross-country team’s first meet at Maidu Park in Roseville on Saturday, Aug. 29.

Freshman Heidi Johnson ran in the 4,000 meter, her first high-school race.

“Though I was far from the top, I did a lot better than I expected for having only been training for one week,” Johnson said.

Johnson said she looks forward to improving and seeing her progress throughout her first high-school season following her success in middle school, including a second place overall finish in sixth grade.

Johnson has participated in cross-country since fifth grade, but has had to change her longtime training regiment because of knee pain.

To overcome her injury, Johnson said she plans to run on the elliptical during some of her training sessions, which she hopes will take place four to five times a week.

The next meet will be Saturday, Sept. 5, at Willow Hills Reservoir Course in Folsom.
