In their first scrimmage of the season, the boys’ lacrosse team defeated Bella Vista, 6-3, on Monday, March 9.
Sophomore Aidan Cunningham scored two goals and senior Johnson Ma scored one.
Three Bella Vista players made the other SCDS points. Because many Cavs couldn’t play due to basketball and illness, Bella Vista lent some of the players on their team to Country Day’s.
There were only seven Cavs: Cunningham and seniors Alex Bushberg, Michael Wong, Keegan Crain, Chris Liston, Maxwell Shukuya and Ma.
The game also didn’t have official refs, just coaches.
And because junior Brad Petchauer is also on the basketball team, Country Day had a practice goalie guard: a black sheet of rubbery plastic that protects the goal.
Bella Vista, a Division 1 sports school, came into the game with an overall record of 1-0. However, Cunningham said they weren’t as good as he had expected.
“Their stick skills (such as) throwing and catching, and their lacrosse IQ were not as good as I thought they would be,” Cunningham said.”We could definitely compete with them in the future with a few more key players and a little more practice.”
Bella Vista wasn’t good at seeing the field and knowing what to do with the ball, he said.
However, Bella Vista did have an actual goalie.
The next game will be away against Sir Francis Drake High School on Thursday, March 12.
