Coaches Dave Ancrum and Gary Brisco jumped up and embraced each other as the final buzzer rang.
“The Cavs win the league championship for the first time in school history!” the announcer cheered.
The boys’ varsity easily beat Buckingham, 79-41, at home on Feb. 17.
“It’ll be a different season now, so we gotta get crackin’ and let the kids do what they do,” Ancrum said.
Senior Skovran Cunningham, who was honored at the “senior night” game along with seniors George Cvetich and Jaspreet Gill, was ecstatic about the win.
“After the last couple of years, it’s really nice to come out on top of the league,” he said.
Freshman Rick Barros III was the team’s high scorer, with 28 points (two 3-pointers). Freshmen Jayce McCain and B.J. Askew scored 20 (two 3-pointers) and 15 points, respectively.
“Our entire heartbeat was on point tonight, and we (gonna) eat at playoffs,” Barros said.
The Cavs have their first playoff game on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The location, time and opponent have yet to be determined.
