Girls’ basketball triumphs against Cristo Rey

When senior Micaela Bennett-Smith received her third foul in the first five minutes of the girls’ basketball match Feb. 3, against Cristo Rey High School, coach Matt Vargo tried to reel in the Cavs’ energy.

“Come on, you guys, no fouls, no fouls!”

Vargo’s reasoning was sound, considering the Cavs’ league record was 3-5 and Cristo Rey’s was 0-8.

As predicted, the Cavs beat the Saints 22-13.

“Our spacing, passing and cutting were on point,” junior Julia Owaidat said.

Even with only one sub, the girls were able to maintain a 5-point lead throughout the game.

Owaidat was the top scorer for Cavs, with the only 3-pointer in the match.

The Cavs’ next home game is Thursday, Feb. 5, against Wilton Christian High School at 6 p.m.
