The boys’ junior varsity team lost their title of being undefeated after a narrow loss to Valley Christian on Jan. 27, 39-42.
The Cavs came into this game with an overall record of 5-0 while Valley was 7-4.
“We won’t have Reggie (at the game), who is a pretty consistent and key scorer,” freshman Jake Longoria said before the game. “(Also), we won’t have Adam, who is also a strong scorer around the hoop and a good rebounder.”
That’s because freshman Reggie Fan and sophomore Adam Dean were playing for the varsity team.
“We just need players to step up this game,” Jake added. “But we have been rebounding and boxing out a lot better as a team. (However), we still miss layups, but not as much (as in the beginning of the season).”
Freshman Bryce Longoria was the top scorer, with 9 points.
Following Bryce, freshman Miles Edwards and sophomore Emil Erickson scored 8 points apiece.
“(We needed to) make our layups,” Edwards said after the game. “(Also), we needed to talk more on defense.”
Bryce agreed with Edwards.
“We missed a lot of layups, which lost us the game,” Bryce said. “If we made them, the other team wouldn’t have had a chance to come back. Overall, we need to execute on offense better.”
“We lost our momentum,” Jake said. “I don’t believe we were outplayed this game. No adjustments were made to stop their style of basketball, and it wasn’t a matter of our skill. It was just our lack of adjustment.”
The JV’s next game will be at Sacramento Adventist, on Thursday, Jan. 29, at 4:30 p.m.
