Sophomore Adam Dean wins the initial tip off.

Despite missing top scorer, boys’ JV defeats Buckingham

Even though one of the team’s top scorers, freshman Bryce Longoria, didn’t play in the game, the boys’ junior varsity basketball team defeated Buckingham Charter Magnet High School, 58-16, on Jan. 23.

Bryce didn’t play in the game because of an illness.

“We will need people to step up and fill (Bryce’s) role,” freshman  Jake Longoria said before the game.

Buckingham came into the game with an overall record of 0-5 and a league record of 0-2.

“We have to rebound and box out (to win),” Jake said.

Jake was the top scorer of the game, with a total of 14 points.

Sophomore Aidan Cunningham and freshmen Miles Edwards and Reggie Fan scored 10 points apiecd.

Starters included sophomores Adam Dean, Cunningham and Emil Erickson, as well as Edwards and Fan.

“We made more layups than the other team,” Cunningham said. “We got more rebounds, and we had control of the ball for the majority of the game. We took good shots (instead of) just the first one we saw.”

“We moved the ball and worked hard on defense,” Edwards said.

Jake agreed.

“We did a good job boxing out and got most of the rebounds,” he said. “We executed really well.”

The boys’ next game will be at Valley Christian, on Tuesday, Jan. 27, at 4:30 p.m.
