The track and field team competed in the CVCL/SMAL/NPAC League Championships at Delta High School in Clarksburg, May 14.
This meet gave the runners a chance to qualify for the Section Trials. The Section Trials are followed by the Section Finals.
Sophomores Serajh Esmail and Elinor Hilton and senior Charlie Johnson placed first in their events.
Esmail ran in the 100-meter and 200-meter races, with times of 12.28 seconds and 24.84 seconds, respectively.
Though Hilton and Johnson placed first, they competed alone in their respective races, which automatically qualified them for the Section Trials. Hilton competed in the 300-meter hurdle race, with a time of 1:04.88. Johnson also competed in the 300-meter hurdle race, with a time of 57.47 seconds.
Neither will race in the Section Trials, however. According to coach Nick Domich, they wouldn’t place very well against the juniors and senior runners from bigger schools
Esmail, on the other hand, will be continuing to the Section Trials.
Although Esmail’s time of 00:12.28 wasn’t his fastest time in a 100 race, he broke his previous record for a 200 race.
Esmail said that this was mainly because he “had a great start and good form throughout the race.”
Esmail also said that he has improved considerably from last year. However, he said he could have put more effort into training this season to have better times, Esmail said.
Domich agrees.
“(Esmail) will continue to get faster, but he needs to train more frequently and get into the weight room if he really wants to improve,” Domich said.
Esmail will compete at the Section Trials on Tuesday, May 20, at CSU Stanislaus, in Turlock.
