Students gathered round tables and painted their red and black shirts early in the week in preparation for Sept. 17 activities and club fair. Some students painted their shirts with designs ranging from Kirby from Super Smash Bros to stars. Some added their graduation year and names.
Dean of Student Life Patricia Jacobsen helped hang up the shirts to dry on a makeshift clothesline.
Students laughed and complimented one another on their creations while teachers smiled and watched everything unfold.
In past years, a whole high-school capture-the-flag game has been hosted at Ancil Hoffman Park and served as a break from classes and as a bonding experience for the high school community, Jacobsen said.
This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the capture-the-flag game has been postponed until spring.
“We’re not going to break the rules. We’re going to wait until later in the year when we’re actually able to do a true Ancil Hoffman event,” said senior Student Body President Dylan Margolis.
This year’s fall event will be a day of small activities and a club fair.
“The activities that we’ll be having this year are volleyball, flag football, corn hole, speed scrabble, basketball, Super Smash Bros and chess,” Jacobsen said.
These activities will be played from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
College Counselor Alicia Perla came up with the club fair idea. Students will have the opportunity to visit club booths from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Classes will be held in the morning only if teachers choose to have them.
Head of High School Brooke Wells will be barbecuing lunch for all of high school and there will be early dismissal at 2 p.m.
During the games, students will be broken into teams based on the color of their shirts. Freshmen and seniors will be wearing black shirts, while sophomores and juniors will be wearing red shirts.
“The goal of the day is to be together and have fun!” Jacobsen said.
