Two Jazz Band groups performed at the Reno Jazz Festival on Saturday, April 30.
The Gypsy Jazz Combo of senior Keaton Ochoa (guitar), sophomore Lily Brown (violin) and eighth grader Lucas Fishman (acoustic bass) received straight 1’s from the three judges, scoring in the 90’s (out of 100 points) and taking home the second-place trophy in the “B” division for schools with fewer than 1000 students.
All three members received medals.
The Cruise Boat Combo, which includes senior Colby Conner, junior Fred Xu, sophomores Annya and Katia Dahmani, freshmen Heidi Johnson, Alex Rogawksi and Ben Miner, and seventh grader Allie Bogetich, received straight 2’s, scoring in the 80’s.
Miner, Johnson, and Bogetich also received outstanding musicianship medals.
“Winning any trophy at the Reno festival is not easy,” director Bob Ratcliff said, “and I am very proud of how well our students handled a very difficult situation, especially after having such a crazy week at school, a late night Friday night and then a 7:30 a.m. call time at the college Saturday morning.”
