Update: The owl mascot has been named Baxter, after Baxter Geeting, who was one of the founding members of the school.
Bubo, Chien Hoot, Hooter, and Hedwig—all are names submitted for the 50th anniversary owl.
At the Jan. 10 pep rally, the owl made its first public appearance after an incubation period on the trellis between Matthews Library and Geeting Hall.
Throughout December, passersby were able to gaze at the steadily growing golden egg in a brown nest.
“I thought it was real!” said teacher Patricia Fels. (Fels was not the only one fooled by the egg; so was this reporter.)
The 50th anniversary committee distributed name suggestion slips on Jan. 14 to all grades. Submitted names will first be categorized to avoid duplicates, and then a quorum of the committee will choose the name of the owl on Thursday, Jan. 16.
The name will be announced Jan. 17 in the Friday Email.
