In addition to increasing enthusiasm for the upcoming Homecoming basketball games, the 2014 winter pep rally also served another purpose: unveiling the school’s 50th anniversary mascot, a burrowing owl.
From the school’s founding in 1964 to the mid-’80s, the owl was the SCDS mascot. It was replaced by the Cavalier, the school’s current mascot.
The owl has not yet been named, as its name will be chosen in a week-long contest. Students and teachers can enter names.
Freshman Shriya Nadgauda believes that the owl increased enthusiasm during the rally, which is one of the reasons that the owl was included.
On top of the owl making its first public appearance, high schoolers sat with lower schoolers, in hope of increasing enthusiasm and making the lower schoolers excited about being in high school in the future.
