Octagon staff attends state journalism convention, Oct. 11-12

The Octagon staff will attend the state journalism convention at the Sacramento Convention Center on Oct. 11-12.

JEANC, the Journalism Education Association  of Northern California, holds its annual fall convention in Sacramento every other year. The staff is attending to learn new ways to improve both the online and print editions.

The convention offers many sessions taught by journalism advisers and professional journalists. A few are titled “The point of the click,” “Your future at a newspaper company,” “The Sports Report,” and “Make writing fun and get paid.”

The convention also includes writing contests. Eight staff members will enter sessions, ranging from sports writing to feature writing; Ryan Ho, Elena Lipman, Kamira Patel, Emma Williams, Connor Martin, Grant Miner, Eric Hilton and Zoe Bowlus.

Another convention feature is a 20- minute critique of the first print issue of the Octagon.
