Junior golfer falls short of victory in Section Masters but still goes down in history

The golf season came to an end on May 15, with Section Masters.

One hundred and seventeen golfers participated from schools all over northern California – all-division inclusive (Division I to Division VI).

Country Day was represented by its only qualifier: junior Miles Edwards. Edwards advanced after finishing in the top three in Sections the prior week.

Section Masters was held at The Reserve at Spanos Park in Stockton. The course was windy with lots of water.

“It was easily the most difficult course I played on all season,” Edwards said.

As a result, Edwards played “consistently mediocre golf” throughout the day.

“My game was not sharp,” Edwards said. “It was kind of ‘eh’ the whole day. No super good holes, but no detrimental ones either.”

Edwards finished with an 87, placing him right in the middle of the pack. The first-place finisher from Lodi High School (Div. I) shot a  68, while the last-place finisher from Bret Harte Union High School (Div. V) finished with 113.

Though Edwards was disappointed in his performance, he said he was also proud of himself for making it this far.

“It felt cool to be the only Country Day student representing our school at this huge tournament,” Edwards said.

Coach Matt Vargo, who attended the event, said he was proud as well.

“He (Miles) hung in there with the best players from the biggest schools,” Vargo said.

Though Edwards did not place high in Section Masters, he is one of two Cavaliers to ever advance this far in season competition, the other being Mark Davidson, ‘06, who later worked briefly as a golf pro..

And Edward’s said he’s already looking forward to next season.

“I am going to keep practicing and refining my game,” Edwards said. “My hopes are to make it farther individually and as a team.”

Vargo is also optimistic about the next season.

“We are a young team with a lot of potential,” Vargo said. “Hopefully we use the experience this season and come back hungry to try and win a league championship.”
