Despite challenging weather, two ski and snowboard team members qualified for the California Nevada Interscholastic Ski and Snowboard Federation (CNISSF) Championships.

At Boreal Mountain Resort on Feb. 17, sophomore Luca Procida and senior team captain Daniel Hernried competed in two ski races. Procida earned second and third, while Hernried finished fifth and sixth. Those finishes meant that Procida and Hernried received second and sixth place, respectively, in the league.

Junior Nina Dym was unable to compete as her wisdom teeth were being removed.

Weather during the races created difficulties, according to Procida and Hernried.

“The snow was soft and deep  (which) slowed me down during the races as I had to make sure that I didn’t catch an edge in the deep snow,” Procida said.

“The course got rutted up,” Hernried said. “It felt dangerous at times because I was being thrown around the race course, and it took more effort to fully complete my turns.”

Additionally, Hernried said that participating in baseball practices during the week and skiing the day before made him sore.

However, Hernried said he was excited about being sixth in the league and that his last two races advanced him from seventh to sixth place.

“These races were my best yet,” Hernried said. “I am proud to see how far I have improved over the past seasons!”

For the awards ceremony, all teams attended a barbecue held at the Auburn Ski Club, where the top 10 in each sport were acknowledged.

The CNISSF Championships will be at Northstar California; Procida and Hernried will race Wednesday, March 8, and Thursday, March 9.

The race scheduled for Feb. 16 was cancelled due to weather conditions and will not be rescheduled since all league competition must be finished by Feb. 17.
