Friday the 13th was definitely unlucky for the JV girls’ basketball team, which didn’t score a single point in their Homecoming game against Valley Christian High School until the second period.
Sophomore Chloe Collinwood finally sank one for the Cavs, but in the end they lost badly, 8-49.
Coach Latonia Pitts said the disappointing loss was due to a lack of practice and playing time since winter break.
“It took a while to warm up to the game in general,” Pitts said. “They hadn’t played since before Christmas break. It was like a fresh start for many of them.”
According to sophomore Bella Mathisen, the Cavs couldn’t finish when they managed to make it to the basket.
“We rarely get to the basket, and when we do, we don’t make (the shot),” said Mathisen.
Additionally, the opposing team’s strong offense forced the girls to focus on defense.

“(Valley Christian) pressed in the first half (and were) attacking the basket,” Pitts said.
After tripping and falling, freshman Jewel Turner looks to toss to an open Cavalier.
Luckily, the Cavs will have three more chances to take back their win from Valley Christian, but Pitts said that will only happen if the team continues to practice hard.
“It’s really important to make practice,” Pitts said. “We have to make our shots. We can’t be afraid to attack.”
The first of three chances will arrive soon, as the girls’ next game is Tuesday, Jan. 24, away at Valley Christian, at 4:30 p.m.
